Princess Mahakwe (8), like many children growing up in working class homes, co-parents herself with her grandmother, who works night shifts in a factory. We meet Princess on the morning of the school awards ceremony, where she is tipped to receive top honors. The problem is Princess’ does not want to attend the event in her broken school shoes. She is confident, however, that her grandmother will meet her at the school with brand new shoes, before the prestigious event. Meanwhile, Thandi is on the other side of town dealing with unexpected obstacles.
